Regional Conferences for ZHL

Post by Mets » Fri Sep 16, 2016 2:53 am

This is an idea I've had for awhile, but never brought it up on the forums or LM meetings because I didn't think it was appropriate at the time with all the other issues that were at hand. The people I've talked to about this seemed receptive and asked me to post it on the forum.

One issue I see with ZHL is very few people, particularly west players, get to play on their home server. The vast majority of ZHL games are Central. Why not have a West and East conference next season and keep the cross-conference games locked to Central?

Potential Benefits:
1. Everyone gets to play a significant amount of games on their home server.
2. More EU players/EU players on a more even playing field, since several of them could easily start on an East team (Slide, Joker, Tyrion, Asgarr, Angry, just to name a few), assuming good attendance.
3. Gives more west players a chance to start ZHL who have been passed by for Central/East players of around the same skill level.
4. Enhanced level of play (less people playing off-server, more skilled EU players getting to play ZHL.)

Potential Drawbacks:
1. Not enough West players/owners.

Curious to see what other people think and why this hasn't been tried before?

Skill is not equally divided between servers most of the time.

What about the central players?! Keep the perma-central dream alive! #centrallivesmatter

On a more serious note, this is an interesting idea. However, most of the central players would end up playing in the eastern conference due to lower ping, so there would be a large disparity in the number of players in the 2 conferences.

Also, the central cross conference games would probably be very one sided as there are not many west players that either 1) have good ping to the central server or 2) can handle higher ping (80+ ms) very well. Hence, why you probably don't see many west players currently in ZHL.

how would you know?

all we play is central

why do you think there are fewer good west players still playing? because they got worse? pls

what happened to proster, watermelon, tinyterran, countryken, daggius, crush, ranch, scores, cafca, teroh? do you think at least some of these west players might've stuck around if ZHL didn't begin disadvantaging west players so heavily? Think about it - we get 4 games max with less than 85ms (or at least that's what i get to central with 90mbps wired internet). There are EU players with better ping than me on central, consistently beating me in faceoffs - that is how much it favors east players. all you gotta do is look at a map of the US to realize chicago is not in the middle

We should try this system for Season 9. Then after S9 is over, we can easily examine how well it worked.

Are you really trying to say that there is enough west players to make up 5 teams which would be enough for 1 conference? you basically only have 2 teams at most with 2 1st rounders on west. Most of the player pool is east and central and that goes way back when we didnt have central as the main server used. Theres a lot more players in the league that has a worse ping to west , 100+ ping than players that has a bad ping to central. Its extremely rare to see someone with decent internet having 100+ ping on central. The best would have to have a standalone that doesnt rely on ping as much.

How would play-offs work?
Each conference has it's own bracket?
What about the finals? - West team vs East team?
