If I understand TK's post correctly, its not as much of a draft as a free agency. Interesting concept. I would add that after a team places a bid, other teams have 24 hours to match the bid or go up. then again other teams have another 24 hours from that bid to continue to up it until it hits max.

Not exactly -- it is still a full fledged draft and it's actually a much more exciting draft because you can get a player at any time. So for example -- if we have 10 teams and each team picks 10 players, there are 100 picks (minus the player owners so actually like ~92-94 picks).

The person with the top draft order gets to pick the first player to bid on. All owners can bid. Owners have 45 seconds to bid, whoever has the highest bid at the end wins the player. If there is a tie, then the draft admin has to do a /random to see who wins (maybe over skype video so everyone could see).

Then whoever is the second in the draft order picks the next player to bid on and you do that bid.


The whole draft from start to finish would 2-3 hrs with this many players and is fast paced because you could get a player at any time. we did this draft like 6-7 times in striker tourneys (usually took 15-25 min after we got the format down) and people love it because you have some control over who you pick more than the regular draft order is.

Free agency pickups might need a slight tweak since someone could just hop on right before the 3 days are up and snipe the pick up at the minimum cost by making the last post 30 seconds before the 3rd day is up.

Hmm very good point that is a huge flaw. I don't want to make (restricted) free agency too time consuming for owners to be able to do but it shouldn't wreck the balance of the league either. It should be able to be a good tool to help fix balance for teams with a lot of salary to get the best free agents. And typically you will have a lot of salary because you have less 'free market talent' after the draft.

Hmmmm. Maybe owners post within 1 day if they are interested in the free agent and then a league admin (wild, rep, teroh) or a non-bidding owner holds a live bid for the interested owners.

I really like this bidding idea. Give team captains the power to bid in an owner's absence if they cannot make it, and it could work really nicely.

The biggest flaw in the current system is that players are willing to take the lowest salary possible in order to get on a better team. Rather than making salary mean more to players, this idea removes the problem entirely. 10/10

Auction is a good idea. A few things though.

There's no need to do $1000 per team with $5 minimum. You can do 200/1 and it's the same thing. 200/1 is pretty much the standard for most auctions anyway. The minimum player cost should simply be the minimum bid unit ($1). If we do an auction, the owners definitely need to do some full mock drafts because people always screw up their first auction draft, and a good auction drafter going against inexperienced drafters will be OP.

Another thing to consider is using leftover pool in free agency. Free agents would be bid on once a week with whatever cash was leftover from your pool (waivers). For this plan, I think it would be good to use $300/1. This would stop people from neglecting to register for the draft with the intent of later signing with a specific team to make a super team.

Like you said, it's a free market approach. If buying top players for exorbitant amounts and spending low on next tier of players is the best way to build a team, there's no reason to stop teams from doing that. If teams use 75% of their budget on 2-3 elite players, and spend $1 on everyone else, why do we care? The goal isn't to try to control how much teams spend on players. Trying to do that will only screw up the free market aspect of the draft. For a successful auction, you want to provide a very simple framework to operate in and let the market sort everything else out.

I think it would be good if we did the draft for the minimum number of players. Drafting the minimum roster of 8 as opposed to drafting a full roster of 10 could leave the opportunity for an interesting first couple of weeks between free agency and trades (I think?) because people wouldn't have completely full rosters and would probably have a bit of salary to play around with.
I can't think of any good reason to argue for or against a minimum salary for a player so I'll stay out of that one.
