Switching to Mixer from Twitch

Post by Mets » Tue Jul 18, 2017 6:47 am

For the next season of ZHL, and eventually on Cryoblade, the casting team should consider switching to Microsoft's new streaming service, Mixer (formerly Beam) in place of Twitch. Microsoft is investing a lot into this service and hopes for it to eventually grow into a competitor of Twitch. Just after a few months, it already has a ton of cool features that Twitch doesn't.

Some of the features:

1.) Co-streaming:

Up to four streamers who are playing the same multiplayer game can stream simultaneously on one page and viewers can easily swap between them. This would allow us to have games during events (like tournaments) played at the same time while being casted. It'd also allow us to return to a Sunday-only format and have ZHL and Probe games played at the same time.

2.) Higher quality streaming:

Mixer allows for video streaming of up to 4K quality. Twitch does not.

3.) More exposure:

Because Zealot Hockey usually averages 40+ viewers during ZHL, we would typically be featured on the frontpage of Mixer, allowing us to gain more exposure. The current Twitch stream is generally just the same people from the community watching.

4.) Easier to stream:

Mixer has a distinct advantage for PC owners in that it doesn’t require any third party broadcasting software or a capture card. Like the Twitch and YouTube apps for console, you just click a button to get started. It also works with popular third-party broadcasting apps such as OBS and XSplit, though, for those that prefer those services. Now, anyone could easily stream Zealot Hockey.

5.) Low latency streaming:

Mixer is also extremely low latency, meaning that interaction between streamers and viewers is almost instantaneous. According to Mixer itself there’s only ever under one second of delay.

6.) Potential for interactive casts:

Mixer focuses on video gaming, including playthroughs of video games, but is primarily distinguished by features designed to allow viewers to interact with streams. Using an SDK, features can be integrated into games to allow users to affect gameplay or vote on elements using buttons displayed alongside the stream. Users earn "Sparks" for watching and participating in streams, which can then be spent to activate these features. Mixer advertises that there is a latency of less than a second between the original broadcast and when it is received by users, rather than 10-20 seconds, which facilitates these features and encourages real-time interaction between streamers and their viewers

For example, when streaming a regular ZH game you could have the audience draft for a team. The caster could allow them to use their viewer points to use customized "cheers" or "boos" after goals. A controller could even be programmed to allow viewers to control a goalie in a game. The possibilities are endless. It could give people a reason to cast and watch non-ZHL games for a change.

I see no disadvantage in switching to Mixer, since we're a pretty small community it'd be easy to migrate. Being on Twitch doesn't really offer any advantage IMO.

Seems like a cool way to get extra exposure for the game, especially since this platform is brand new. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get in early, possibly even do some promotional stuff with cryoblade by using their platform.

Exactly what I was thinking. Microsoft would probably love to give some exposure to a game/community that is willing to use Mixer. One idea that Tenkz had was to have an automatic stream on Mixer streaming all the ZHL seasons VODs continuously, something that apparently is pretty easy to do on Mixer.

To all you saying Microsoft sucks, Microsoft >>> Amazon

You can stream vods on twitch (vodcast) and also simulcast (multitwitch)
