BoooM’s EUDL S10 Draft Analysis

Post by BoooM » Sun Feb 10, 2019 7:38 pm

Lime’s Team

Lime drafted Luffy right away and thus managed to unite the only two players in the highest price tier and arguably the two best EU players in one team. This alone makes them absurdly terrifying. Defending against those two will be really hard and getting any reasonable puck possession is already a tall order. Eiki is hardly the strongest 3rd field player pick, but more than capable of holding his own in a main as he just showed by winning last EUDL. He is one of the players that work best with Luffy anyway and is able to score himself as well. The team does not have a star goalie player, but Lime drafted 4(!!!) players that can goalie on more than just acceptable main league level. Even with 3 of them being attendance locked, the team should still always have a decent goalie option.

Money management:
Did not really matter for this team after Lime managed to get Luffy (who is imo a steal at 4.4k being the best striker on EU). At this point Lime just needed a competent 3rd player, which he covered with Eiki (with 620 not the biggest bargain of the draft, but still great value). Lime also got the best deals on his low money ($2) picks with valenz as yet another backup goalie and gust as both goalie and field option, since he may have to use both of them at some point or another.

Strengths:
The two best players on EU are on the same team… This will likely be the top scoring team this season.

Weaknesses:
All of their field players have a tendency to go forward in many situations, so they may end up with more breakaways against them than other teams, but it is questionable if they will really have that many defensive problems to offset their insane offensive potential.

Final Verdict:
There is no doubt that this team will reach the playoff stages and they are one of the top (if not the absolutely top) contenders to win the title this season.

Solid’s Team

The team is very well balanced with Snake as dedicated defender, IsKEK as a good support player, Solid as striker and of course Slide as the best goalie on EU. It will be nigh impossible for most teams to score on them. They seem to lack the offensive edge that some other teams have but with their main lineup, Slide may end up breaking the EU record for most shutouts in a season, so as long as they score a single goal each game, they should easily qualify for the playoffs. All 3 backup players can play at the very least at acceptable main league level, so the team should be able to hold their own even in games that they miss somebody from their main lineup.

Money Management:
Snake at 1.5k is a steal, presumably because other owners did not want to bother having him on their teams given many incidents in the past. 4k+ for a goalie may seem a lot, but it is Slide, and Solid still managed to gather a competent team, so spending that money did not hurt him. IsKEK is another steal at 438, especially considering that some other teams paid 1k-1.6k for their 3rd field players.

Strengths:
Impenetrable defense. I expect half the teams in the league to struggle to score even once on them.

Weaknesses:
Their offensive potential feels lackluster against other teams with competent defense. However, these opponents of theirs will face the exactly same problem.

Final Verdict:
I expect this team to easily win the regular season. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but they are yet another hot contender for the title.

Tomek’s Team

There are 3 strikers that can make the difference in top level games and Tomek managed to get one of them in Poodle. Tomek and Poodle work very well together and are always scary to go up against. However, this time around they lack Solid, who was able to support the team on any position. None of the 3rd field player options for Tomek’s team seem to offer anywhere the same value as Solid, so it is questionable how well they will be able to perform. On top of that, all of their options are highly offensive players, which may leave Tomek alone on defense way too often. Coupled with the lack of a reliable goalie, there is trouble brewing for this team.

Money Management:
From what I hear Tomek had to do the auction draft on his phone, which explains the disastrous money management. His fourth pick costed only $40 and he was left with over 2k for his last 3 players, who he could have probably bought for single digit prices. Poodle at 4.1k is a reasonable pick. Besides that Tomek did not really get any decent bargains and was left with money to throw at players that will hardly improve the team’s performance. At least he has enough depth to not make his team weaker if a main player is missing.

Strengths:
Poodle. Poodle can make magic happen. There is offensive potential beyond that with Lightning, as well as Gavrilius and Erik.

Weaknesses:
With Tomek being the only even remotely defensively minded player on the team and the lack of a reliable goalie this team will struggle a lot to keep the puck outside of their own net.

Final Verdict:
Poodle will be required to show his best possible performance to carry his team to the playoffs. On top of that, somebody besides Tomek will need to learn to get back into their own half.

Dalton’s Team

Dalton managed to assemble a fairly balanced team with all of his main players being able to rotate around and help out in any position. On top of that he managed to beat out Tomek in getting Jenny, who is a very solid goalie. Logik is a powerhouse and could carry the team with his goals but can also switch to defending if required while Dalton and Mets take care of the offense. Bubba is a decent option on offense as well, should any main player be missing. I am not sure if Sly and SF are of any value to the team or were just picked to fill the 7 slots. Especially since SF is attendance locked, currently busy, and may not even show up.

Money Management:
Getting Logik at 4.2k is more than reasonable given his abilities and versatility. Mets at 1.5k can be considered a bargain even with him having to play cross-server. Jenny at 2.1k is a pretty good pick especially compared to Shusu and Solid who shelled out 2.7k and 4k respectively for their goalies. It is especially noteworthy that Dalton managed to put himself in a position that guaranteed him to pick Jenny since no other owner had enough money to steal her from him.

Strengths:
Very high versatility and above average offensive options.

Weaknesses:
Their main team players are very versatile but playing without dedicated positions will require them to practice their team work more than other teams to be able to extract the most of their players.
Jenny is crushing elo games recently and has been known for top performances in privs for a while, but until now she has struggled to show her abilities in EUDL.

Final Verdict:
The team has all the potential needed to win the season. But unlike Lime’s and Solid’s teams, they will have to spend significantly more time to get the most out of their potential. Either way, this team will be able to hold their own against everyone else.

Shusuke’s Team

Overall the team is quite balanced, but lacks a dedicated striker option. Defensively, we should be more than capable to hold our own (after all the Sunny/BoooM combo has 3 EUDL titles). On offense, both Angry and Shusu are able to score reliably but may have trouble against more defensively minded teams (first and foremost going up against Slide). MasuNinja and Alecto are both acceptable sub options for the main team if anyone is missing. InLife gives the team breathing room should Sunshine miss out on any games.

Money Management:
It is obvious that Shusuke expects 100% attendance from his top 4 player after leaving only $10 for his last 3 players. Getting a dedicated defender for 3.8k seems a bit steep especially in comparison to other teams that managed to get a defender / 3rd field player for a fraction of that. Angrytits at 2.5k can hardly be called a bargain but is at a reasonable price. Shelling out 2.7k for Sunshine (making him the second most expensive goalie in the auction draft) may appear steep at first but with the lack of goalies on EU and Sunshine’s proven reliability, it is actually a fair price (never mind that Sunshine has 4 EUDL titles as goalie). Shusuke could have saved 130 on Sunshine and still get him since no owner had enough funds to challenge him. This left his with only $10 for his last 3 players, but he still managed to get 3 players that can all help out the team, so wasting some money did not hurt him after all.

Strengths:
Highly reliable defense should be the cornerstone of the team. Overall fair balance on field and great team cohesion should help out as well.

Weaknesses:
The lack of a top striker can cause a lot of trouble especially when facing Solid’s team.

Final Verdict:
We should be able to be competitive against all other teams, but may struggle quite a bit against defensively positioned teams. We are hardly a top contender for the title but we do have a shot at it.

Vogin’s Team

Comments on Vogin’s picks during the draft were less than nice and I do agree that they were not really unjustified. His first 3 field picks are dedicated strikers and his last 2 picks are yet another dedicated striker and a NA player, who if I am not mistaken has quite a high ping to EU. Literally the only defensive option for the team is Vogin himself unless any of his early picks volunteer to completely change their playstyle and defend. That being said Joker and Locas are both really good strikers and cause headaches to many other teams in the league. Maget can also score more than just occasionally against the very best. Corsinus is a decent goalie (unless there is internal friction in the team).

Money Management:
Joker is in my opinion hands down the most overpriced player in the draft at 4.3k. He is a pretty decent striker and a very intelligent player, but he is not the machine that is Luffy (who went for only $100 more) and not as reliable as Poodle or Logik who both went for less money. Locas is in my opinion a scary striker that is able to click through any defense. I’d argue that 2.4k is a reasonable price for him albeit not a bargain. However, the price seems a bit steep in the context of Vogin basically drafting only strikers. Maget at 1.6k is another questionable pick. Not only is he yet another striker, but McD and IsKEK, who would have made the team much more balanced, went for ~1k less.

Strengths:
I honestly do not really see any pronounced strengths. The most I can say is that Locas is able to make even the best defense despair from time to time and that Joker has a positive impact on any offense both with his scoring abilities and with his game making capabilities.

Weaknesses:
There is no defense. It feels like Corsinus will need 3 forcefields and 5 boosts to have a chance to prevent being scored on at all the time.

Final Verdict:
The personal abilities of the players set aside, I have a hard time seeing this team work out since the combination of players is beyond questionable. I feel like they would need to practice non-stop together to have a chance at performing well.

Klendaju’s Team

Klendaju managed to assemble a highly versatile team of players experienced in basically all positions. Junky, Mos and McD can all rotate freely and fulfill any role needed. They lack a dedicated striker but this should hurt them way less than other teams with the same problem, since their top 3 field players can all create danger in front of the enemy net. Moty is a decent goalie option and with Klen and Twodeuce there are acceptable backups as well. Cerv is doing quite well in privs on EU, so he should be able to sub in for a missing player at least semi-adequately, but he will not be able to carry with his ridiculous ping on EU.

Money Management:
Junky at 3.9k and MoS and 4.1k are nowhere close to being bargains and arguably a bit overpriced compared to the hard carry strikers that were picked for just a bit more, but McD for 651 is the the biggest bargain of the draft alongside Solid’s IsKEK pick. Getting a main level goalie for only 238 is yet another great pick for Klendaju.

Strengths:
Their top 3 field players would all have been R1 to early R2 picks in a snake draft. This is a very solid team.

Weaknesses:
I do not see any glaring weaknesses in this team. The lack of a top striker is a weakness that hardly matters on this team. Keeping Moty happy and motivated may turn out to be the biggest challenge for them.

Final Verdict:
They should be able to easily reach the playoff stages and have a realistic shot at getting the title.

Final Ranking:

I’d separate the teams in 3 tiers with no particular ranking within a tier.

Tier 1 (top contenders for the title)
Lime’s Team – top 2 players on the same team
Solid’s Team – impenetrable defense with above average offensive potential

Tier 2 (can compete for title and give close games to anyone)
Dalton’s Team – balanced team with a hard carry in Logik
Shusuke’s Team – balanced team with an above average defense
Klendaju’s Team – highly versatile team

Tier 3 (winning the title seems to be nothing short of a miracle)
Tomek’s Team – no reliable goalie and only a single even remotely defensively minded player
Vogin’s Team – there is no defense to speak of
