IMHO there`s no purely defensive player except goalie.
Sure not all can be as devastating attackers as some khem joker khem - but main goal is to score in zealot hockey and if you end up first one with puck in offense then you need to do some magic. Otherwise you give to time for defense to return by passing to 'offensive' player and returning to your 'defensive' post.
I guess you need to ask for lessons from the master attackers to gain confidence. Remember - goalies are more afraid of you than you are of them.

To get this thread back on track a bit, everyone is kind of right, I'll just chip in what I think. I play mostly pubs, and as others have mentioned, nobody plays D in pubs. Because I kind of like winning, I've found myself settle into a role that is almost purely defensive. This works pretty great in many cases (especially pubs), because a good D-man can reduce scoring opportunities by a massive margin. Even elite goalies have a hard time with breakaways, 2 on 0s, 3 on 0s....

In short, my defensive play can make a big difference in games.

However, because I've been playing almost purely D for the past month and a half, I sometimes struggle with offense. I don't notice it in the pubs, but as soon as I play an IH, I very rarely score goals or even come close for that matter. If there was one zealot with the puck ahead of me, and another skater behind me (particularly if it's someone like Watermelon, Vapour, Peter, etc) my default reaction was to fall back and let the trailer go join the rush.

This can really hurt a team's potential offensive power. It takes away chances for odd man rushes, and can strand the puck carrier if it takes too long for the trailer to get into the fray. This was showcased last night in an IH game where it was CK, Irish, TwoDeuce and myself against Guer, Rush, Blue, and Proster. We got outshot something like 35-18 and at times really struggled to generate offense, BUT, in this case we won something like 5-3 because CK's pretty good in net, Irish had Guer's number, and I wasn't the only person playing D. Irish and Deuce both covered up pretty well too. Ofc Irish had all our goals.

I'm taking forever to get to my point, so I'll just come out with it now.

Being a great defensive player is good. But if you don't also have a little bit of offensive prowess, your team is going to struggle creating chances.

With my more recent IH's I've been trying to trust the 3rd man back to stay back, and have been trying to get a little more comfortable with offensive play in a high-competition environment. I'm just starting this process though, but (small) progress has been made.
